A Touch of Velvet

Rich. Sumptuous. Legacy-bearing. Gorgeous. The Bagonghi bag by Roberta di Camerino, how I love thee.

These bag designs were introduced to the world 60 years ago, and they still look as relevant today as they did then. Don’t tell me they wouldn’t look amazing with any Ralph Lauren, JCrew, or Nautica ensemble — or even a cute blouse with capris or jeans and colorful shoes, because I know better.

In 1948, this bag was designed by Roberta di Camerino, and the production methods have remained unchanged. They are handwoven on antique looms, and created according to Venetian tradition. These bags use a special type of velvet with a unique sheen and feel, called “soprarizzo.” The velvet is so rare that they manufacture only about 30 feet per month.

Its form and function has not lost its allure over the years. The Bagonghi has been carried by Grace Kelly, Andie McDowell and Isabella Rossellini. The bags shown here feature a Meridiana design in the center, with leather handles and silver hardware.

These models that use a smashing mix of hues, but they come in many different combinations. Depending on color choice, they can be restrained and elegant, or bright and fun — but always refined.

They have traditionally only been sold in Florence, Italy, and carried by ladies of high society. They are generally sold at Italian stores like Forzieri. It is, today, harder to find — making the lucky owners even luckier.
