Logo: Usually imprinted upon ribbon fabric with a serif font, sans capital letters for a charming, down-home feel. The graphic employs a cute play on Kate’s name, with a K and an 8.

Signature Elements: this label has long been known for its use of patterned fabric, usually on a black background with a pattern of stripes or polka dots in bright colors. Recently, the label has made the move upscale with their Novel collection that uses leather.

Famous Handbag: The first bags made a huge splash in the early 90s: boxy fabric tote bags in really bright colors (sample at left). The designer has really broken through this barrier with twists on their totes, such as the Orchard Street Rae patent tote with the oil slick finish shown at right.

Founder: Partners Kate Brosnahan Spade (born as Katherine Noel Brosnahan) and husband Andy Spade (brother of comic David Spade!) founded the brand. Kate was the small-town Missouri girl who aspired for city greatness. The handbag line started in 1993. Jack Spade was created as a male line.
Current Designer: This couple plays a prominent role in design, though guest designers are frequently employed now.

Company Control/Exclusivity: The website is http://www.katespade.com.
