Chanel is known for its classic looks — pearls, tweed, quilting, and boxy suits. This label may twist something about these signature elements, like tweed with a ragged edge or gunmetal leather, but they’re nearly always on the mark for ladylike sophistication.
While looking at their 2008-2009 Fall Winter line, one of their bag seemed to break this tradition: the Minaudiere shown at left. Made of calfskin patent leather in a deep red, the shape is what threw me — I thought it was a pitcher at first.
This bag is designed to be carried either traditionally with the bejeweled strap, or from the carafe-like handle. The question is why have the second option — is it for security that your bag will stay firmly in hand, rather than dangling haphazardly from the chain?
Or, is it just to be different? Admittedly, this bag does look like a piece of sleek modern art. The color is rich and the shape is organic and liquid — it resembles a teardrop.
My opinion wavers on this one, but it has definitely caught my eye. Check it out on Chanel.com.
