Burberry has made a career of their classic check pattern, which was trademarked in 1920. The company became staid when they started becoming known only for trenchcoats.
When CEO Rosemary Bravo took over the company in the 1990s, designers revamped the check pattern to cover bikinis and caps, spicing up the image. Unfortunately,
a lot of the British so-
called “underclass” got a hold of the brand and wore it with everything, to the point where upscale clubs would not admit anyone with a Burberry check cap.

The design house has countered with a move toward items without the plaid pattern, emphasizing the horse instead. Case in point: the Ashbury bag at left. The bag is a nice, roomy size, at 13″ wide, and an 8.5″ handle drop so that it can slip over the shoulder easily. The bag comes in light brown and black — the light brown is especially versatile. Don’t miss the plaid pattern too much though — the lining is in this pattern. $1095 at Net-a-Porter.com.
